Société Française de Vierzon 302 Detail 1

The engine of the Société Française de Vierzon 302 could be started by two methods, the first of which required a blow lamp to pre-heat the hot-bulb section of the cylinderhead to a temperature of 550° to 600° before swinging the engine using the flywheel. On tractors fitted with a battery an alternative method was to use a two stroke mix of oil and petrol (standard Mobylette mixture was recommended) a fuel tap was opened to allow the mixture to be injected into the cylinder, the engine was then turned over using the flywheel and a high tension coil provided a spark to the igniter (similar to a four electrode spark plug).  With tractors, such as the very easy to start and equally, if not more powerful Fordson Major available, it is not very difficult to see why the Vierzon and the two other very similar tractors from Field Marshall and Lanz failed to retain their place in the market.  It is claimed that the introduction of propagaz (propane/butane gas) blow torches significantly reduced burn injuries among users of Vierzon and Lanz tractors.
