David Brown 2D Rowcrop Tractor 1957

The David Brown 2D Row-crop Tractor was in production from 1956 to 1961.  It was a useful row-crop tractor designed for smallholder's and market gardeners.  Power was provided by a 14 h.p. four-stroke, air-cooled 2 cylinder diesel engine, drive was via a single-plate clutch and a four forward and one reverse speed gearbox which was mounted above the rear axle.  Standard equipment included, independent drum brakes, adjustable wheel track and a compressed air "Air-Light" implement lift system.  A compressor driven by the tractor engine provided compressed air for the two lift cylinders which raised and lowered the under-slung or rear mounted tool bars.  Ingenious use was made of the tubular steel chassis as an air reservoir, a novel feature was a connection provided for a tyre inflator.  Although advertised as being capable of all tasks the 2D was at it's best when employed for row-crop work with an 8ft or 10ft wide mid-mounted tool bar.
